Mmbabane (Swaziland)

Agreeneth Jantjies is a teacher in Swaziland. When she came to the Jamboree I she had just buried her niece’s daughter who was 20 when she died of an AIDS related sickness. Her niece, Thabile Mbatha lives in Cape Town and despite grieving for her daughter and being in emotional turmoil, she still attended Jamboree I. She gave a talk on effective communication and was really open in answering questions about her daughter.

Agreeneth feels for children and constantly highlights issues of AIDS with her learners. She leads them to greater awareness and encourages them to take responsibility for their own lives. She also openly expresses opposition to polygamy which the King of Swaziland, and many other men, still practice. She explained that she doesn’t want to lack respect for her country’s King but she feels very strongly that his behaviour is an obstacle in the fight against AIDS in Swaziland. Men take it for granted that having more than one sexual partner is acceptable, the most powerful man in the country encourages it.

She started teaching about 50 children last year and now reaches 75. She has also started at a neighbouring school.

Golepa High School has given her an obsolete building which she hopes to turn into a testing and counselling centre this year. She needs to equip the centre with the necessary materials and testing equipment. She hopes to secure most of the medical equipment and some medical staff from the government.

She has trained 10 counsellors who will provide a safe place for children to speak their hearts and learn about prevention and treatment.
